Medical anthropology. I study how communities in Brazil engage with national and international policies regarding their uses of traditional medicine. What is the best thing you’ve done as a graduate student at SMU? I worked at the Hamon Arts Library for two years as a graduate reference assistant. It was great to meet people from outside of my discipline and to learn about subjects that I have little knowledge about. The librarians and staff are also incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and creative, which made working there a constant joy. What is your favorite thing to do in Dallas? I enjoy going to the Dallas Arts District for block parties and festivals. Also, there’s almost nothing I love more than eating good food, and DFW has some excellent restaurants. Some of my favorites in the Metroplex are Dingdi (Burmese) in Lewisville, Taste of Europe (Eastern European) in Arlington, and Havana Cafe (Cuban) in Dallas. What do you wish you had known before starting graduate school? The graduate school experience is as much about forming relationships as it is about research, coursework, and degree requirements. It’s important to build collegiality with your fellow graduate students. They are not only a crucial part of your professional network, but they also become your friends and your support network. Also, establishing good relationships with administrators and staff on campus will make your life much easier. Read more Punarjit Roychowdhury PhD, Economics, Class of 2017 Punarjit Roychowdhury PhD, Economics, Class of 2017 What is your research area? I am an applied microeconomist. My research focuses on how social interactions and social networks influence individual economic decisions and outcomes. What is the best thing you’ve done as a graduate student at SMU? I have written several interesting research papers in the last couple of years under the supervision of my adviser. I presented one of my papers at the SMU Graduate Research Day 2016 for which I won the Dean’s award. I have also thoroughly enjoyed teaching undergraduate courses in economics as an adjunct lecturer. What is your favorite thing to do in Dallas? I am a film buff. So, when I am not working on my dissertation, I often go to the movies. I also like to try new food from different places in and around Dallas. What do you wish you had known before starting graduate school? Research is a 24-7 process (and often it is very frustrating). So it is important for one to be know how to successfully strike a balance between research and personal life. I wish I had known this before starting graduate school. Through several avenues of SMU funding, I've been able to present research at several scholarly conferences, including Cambridge University. What is your favorite thing to do in Dallas? I love walking or running at White Rock Lake, strolling through the arboretum, and enjoying great food and drink at one of Dallas' many excellent restaurants. What do you wish you had known before starting graduate school? My colleagues in graduate school would become an important part of my support system. Building those relationships and caring about that community has been one of the most rewarding -- but surprising -- parts of graduate school.
